Proud to be an American?

25 07 2009

These days I’m finding it harder and harder to be ‘Proud to be an American’.  At one point of my life I had the grand hope that the United States of America would be the shining city on the hill and help fuel freedom around the world.

Let’s start with the world.  Right now there is a population of approximately  6.7 Billion people.  I’m going to do a very simplistic calculation.  I will use the basic two basic freedoms of speech and religion and ask how many countries have mechanisms protecting those two basic God given rights (It’s men that take away or oppress).

Of the 228 countries or territories listed, I took the top 7 most populated countries that have serious restrictions or outright laws preventing freedom of religion and speech.  I didn’t have to go very far at all.  Also, the two largest countries, China and India are have serious restrictions.  In India, the practices are not as intense as China but do exist culturally as well as administratively.

Here are the shocking statistics.  Total world population  = 6.7 billion.  The seven countries population under severe oppression = 3.2 billion, almost 48%.  There are many countries further down the population list such as North Korea, Burma, Saudi Arabia, etc that would push the percentage to way over 50%.

Why hasn’t the world seen the great advantages of a free people?  In my mind there are two reasons.

Reason 1.  Countries that are under oppression are under the thumb of leaders or leadership that has a vested interest in maintaining power.  For example, in North Korea, the whole government is designed to perpetuate the mental Illness  that Kim Jong-il is God.  Of course with that power you can do anything you want and get away with it of course until Kim Jong Ding Dong dies and meets the real God.  Here are two videos.  The first one is long yet very informative of what horror the people of North Korea are going through.

Reason 2. We have permitted and facilitated financial global rape, pillage and plunder.  Consumed by economic world conquest, individuals and companies based in the United States have put a sour taste in peoples mouths of what they equate to be coming from a free society.  Unfortunately, freedom to behave badly is a choice when you have freedom.

Iraq may indeed come off the list of oppressed nations but at this point the freedom of religion is culturally and regionally prohibited.

There is much to do for people of the world to experience freedom.  We must fight for freedom and liberty in this country and other countries of the world.  Our brothers and sisters deserve better.
